Virginitiphobia
— The fear of rape.
by Patrick Ryan Frank
They took her out to the field in a new black truck
that smelled like apples and the denim
of a young man's thigh. They turned the engine off
but left the radio on, the headlights lighting
the woods to the west, toward the mountains, then
to California. They laid her down
and tied her hands over her head with field-grass.
She could have pulled them free, no problem,
ripped the roots right out of that soft dark dirt.
They told her she was beautiful.

When I was in living in Tokyo my favorite restaurants was this vegan/macrobiotic place named Cafe 8 (http://www.cafe8.jp/). They had the most amazing tofu whipped cream I have ever tasted.. so I just had to buy their cookbooks. I made the tofu whipped cream recipe for the first time yesterday and it turned out perfect. I think its definitely worth sharing :)
So here it is:
1 package drained firm silken tofu
4-5 tablespoons maple syrup
1-2 teaspoons rum
dash of vanilla extract
dash of salt
Blend the tofu until smooth in food processor. Blend in the maple syrup little by little. Blend rum, vanilla extract and salt. Add more maple syrup and rum if necessary.

There wasn't much new that came out of Regeneration Blues (talking about favorite regenerations and learning to deal with regeneration), Days of Future Passed (thoughts on RTD), and Reporter of Bannerman Road (SJA); if you've been online, you've heard it all.
The Torchwood Babiez panel was rocking with absolute silliness, and y'all need to join me in sending waves of psychic energy to
jigglykat to get her to draw that cartoon of 10 Doctor babiez standing around a crib with a bow-tied mini Matt Smith in it, because that would be beyond adorable!
I bought Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical and got it autographed... but I was talking to Rob while he signed with a sharpie; when I went to look at it later, it was unreadable because the ink had soaked in!
There are cosplayers: ( Five pictures under here. )
I didn't get a shot of the Charley cosplayer in the R101 jacket holding a Ramsey "vortisaur" doll (although I am sitting right next to her as she sews buttons on a coat.)
Interesting tidbits from Big Finish's panel:
- They are interested in spreading out from tie-ins, but sales of Phantom have been disappointing; the tie-ins have a built-in audience.
- There was a lot of pressure from the audience to bring Charlie back in some manner. India said she'd bribed us all.
- There were so many Sarah Jane-era monsters in the Eight/Lucie stories because Big Finish could use them and nobody else had reused them, and BF had already done daleks and cybermen.
- India was teasing Nick because he tried to read email *on the panel* under the guise of sending a help request for someone who couldn't get their download subscription to start on the right issue.
...augh, there was a lot more, but the shenanigans of the opening ceremony pushed it out of the mental buffer.
Opening ceremony: Nick Briggs was marched up the center aisle by the Dalek Woman. Later, he was talking about how he'd proposed to his girlfriend last year, and how maybe he'd propose to someone else -which is when Rob Shearman started waving at him. "And maybe have another baby," Nick said, ignoring him. Rob nodded and continued to wave.
Lee Jee Tso took a victory lap around the stage, accompanying himself with a boombox beat.
And Paul McGann made his first appearance, tied to Daphne Ashbrook with a 4th Doctor scarf.

Hello,
Could anyone point me to some poems they enjoy that center around the theme of, or mention, monsters? Thank you.

So I was just prescribed some Xanax for flying anxiety. I have a flight to Arizona on Wednesday...well actually two flights. My doctor told me to take 1 or 2 and I should be fine, but I am so scared that it won't work. How many would be safe to take if the 1 or 2 don't work?
I've took 2 last night to see how they would make me feel and they made me pretty calm and then I slept really well, but I'm just scared that I'll be so hopped up on the plane that they won't work.
Thanks!

Conservatives shouldn’t just allow same-sex marriage. They should insist on it.
The conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks made that argument in a 2003 column, and the liberal Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne Jr. recalled his words when he was in Providence on Nov. 8 to speak at the Central Congregational Church.
Brooks’ argument is worth revisiting now that Governor Carcieri, a conservative Republican and Catholic who opposes same-sex marriage, has vetoed a bill that would give domestic partners the right to claim the bodies of — and make funeral arrangements for — their loved ones. The bill passed the House and Senate by a combined vote of 101 to 1. (Only Rep. Arthur J. Corvese, D-North Providence, voted against it.) Two days after the controversial veto, Carcieri told a gay-rights group he was open to a domestic-partnership law bestowing many if not all the rights of marriage, without the right to marry.
Dionne, who describes himself as a progressive Catholic, said he used to oppose same-sex marriage while favoring civil-rights laws protecting gay people. “I’m not going to say anybody who is against gay marriage is a bigot because I once held that position myself,” he said in an interview.

VIENNA — In a blow to Iran, the board of the U.N. nuclear agency on Friday overwhelmingly backed a demand from the U.S., Russia, China and three other powers that Tehran immediately stop building its newly revealed nuclear facility and freeze uranium enrichment.
Iranian officials shrugged off approval of the resolution by 25 members of the 35-nation board of the International Atomic Energy Agency. But the U.S. and its allies hinted of new U.N. sanctions if Tehran remains defiant.
The West said some time remained for Tehran to come around and accept a specific offer that would delay its ability to make a nuclear weapon as well as engage in broader talks with the ultimate goal of persuading it to mothball its enrichment program.
But that window of opportunity would not stay open indefinitely, officials said.

So, for our winter wedding next year, my fiance and I decided we wanted to go with a song that was 'vintage/classic'. I've been scouring google, trying to find a song that I click with, and nothing is really jumping at me. Currently, my favourite is 'I Wanna Be Loved By You' by Marilyn Monroe. It's cute, but I'm not sure if we're going to go with it.
Can anyone suggest a romantic/cute love song for us from the earlier eras? I love The Andrews Sisters and Ella Fitzgerald, but I'm open to different singers.
Also, has anyone on the community worn Alfred Angelo Style #1124 for their wedding? Specifically, a winter wedding? Did the hem ribbon get exceptionally dirty from all the running around you did on your wedding day?
Thanks everyone! :)

- 02:02:05: @gypsyjr Aw, Becky. :( I'm around for a little bit longer.
- 20:17:13: @jumblejim I wouldn't think about that too hard.
- 21:31:38: God damn this sneezing.
- 22:41:08: @Frito_KAL yeah, people who seem to think celebrities are public property every time they leave their house piss me off.
- 23:16:45: @jumblejim Nostalgia?
- 23:20:51: Wikipedia has an entire article on human-goat sexual intercourse. The things the random article button teaches you...

Posted an hour early but announced almost an hour late, it's Happy Hour with John Munch!

Happy Black Friday to all the Americans out there!
I spent my day at Hobby Lobby and my local yarn store, where I got six skeins of alpaca/cotton bulky blend (normally $9.99 each), two skeins of a worsted Sara yarn, and a pack of cable needles for 25 dollars! I'm so glad I ventured out of my house on this crazy day.
Anyway, for Christmas I've decided to knit a bunch of hats, as I've become addicted to making hats.
I'll be using this Banana Republic Hat Knockoff pattern.
I had originally planned to make my sister a scarf in various shades of purple, since she's on the high school dance team, and one of the school's colours is purple. That got screwed up, and I got bored with making a scarf, so I frogged it. I would like to use the yarn for that project on her Christmas hat.
The only problem is that it's worsted weight, and I don't see a gauge listed for the pattern.
If I'm trying to turn worsted weight yarn into super bulky yarn, should I hold four strands together?
And, since I know lots of people are looking for fun, simple gifts to knit, I would like to share the Through the Loops One-Day Beret Recipe. You can knit it with any yarn & any needles.

For Sanctuary fans who are not into incest fic,
triciabyrne1978 have started a comm focused on the female characters of Sanctuary.
templumanilitas
If there's interest in a Dreamwidth mirror, please let us know. :)
Neither of us are judging people who are interested in Sanctuary incest fic, but, from what we've heard around the fandom, there's definitely a desire for a place where people won't run into that.

I find it funny with casual friends at school that I've known for more than a year don't know that I haven't eaten meat in 5 years.
Do you think that there is a line to draw between not being pushy and not letting on that you are vegetarian? Do you think it matters that people know?
I never really care when people don't know, I just find it fun to see their reactions when they are all "are you serious?" after they finally find out.
On the otherhand, I sometimes feel like maybe I should be doing more, without being pushy, to let my thoughts be known. I used to tell my friends about it, but over the years I've let it just kinda fall away, no need to be so active in my campaign when I live it everyday right?
What do you think?

I realize this is a vegetarian group and not a vegan group, so I hope this question is okay. I've decided that I need better gloves in order to survive another winter in Chicago. Although I'm vegetarian and not vegan, I do try to avoid animal products when I can. So other than leather (or fur, obviously), what types of gloves keep you the absolute warmest?
Thank you.
Thank you.
Or is that the return of the revenge of the son of the meme? I can never keep that stuff straight.
These are
valr 's questions.
1. What do you enjoy the most about teaching G/T students?
Spending my days with people of like mind, even if they are 40 years younger than me. I enjoy exposing them to new ideas and watching the light bulbs go off. I enjoy watching them make connections. I enjoy that the older ones "get" some of my jokes. I have one of the best jobs in the world, actually.
2. What do you enjoy least?
Being an afterthought. I don't have a real room, people sometimes don't see the need for the program, and I can't stop teachers from assuming it's all right to assign the kids all the work they missed while they were with me as homework.
3. How many times a year do you typically have to retype your Fighter Biscuit recipe because yet someone else is asking for it?
Usually about 1.3 times per war, plus a couple of other random times during the year. :)
4. What advice might you have for organizing field support a la Fourth Company?
I assume you're talking about advice for an area that never had it before. First and foremost, GET BUY-IN from your constituency...i.e., the fighters. You are there for the fighters. Not for the populace, not for the chirurgeons not to give someone a nice "pelican project". If the buy-in isn't already there, the best way to get it is by quietly and competently offering the services. Do not, under any circumstances, make any noises that imply you are going to force the fighters to drink. Have an organized, calm person in charge who can take charge of things and can train others to do so. Be prepared to be self-sufficient. And start small. If all you can do at first is water and a few pickles, fine.
5. Name three things from the SCA's past that you are happy that happened, but very happy to not have to deal with again?
1. Calontir's becoming a kingdom. I'm delighted it happened, and equally delighted that we don't have to do that again.
2. The Board's waterbearing ruling. It has made things soooo much better, and the initial pain had to occur in order to get the needed change, and now that's over. I just hope no yahoo Board decides it needs further change/tinkering.
3. The creation of the Pelican as its own peerage, and the eventual evolution of it into an order given by kingdoms. Note: I never really had to deal with that, so perhaps it's cheating...in which case, I'd say the firing of Tony Provine...
